Introduction

The Department of Visual Communication Design has a goal of raising competent and future-oriented designers corresponding to new demands of the society in the digital era who implement professional knowledge over visual communication design based on creativity and the sense of shaping.

Handling deeply with graphic design, character design, video image design and digital media contents design, it is committed to cultivating human resources to lead the culture industry.

History

The College of Design and Art was first approved and installed as the Department of Applied Arts in the College of Family in 1968. The College of Design and Art has continued to revise and supplement its educational system to overcome its difficulties as a local university for growing and graduating many qualified students constantly.

In the midst of rapidly changing university environments to the social changes caused by informationization, the College of Design and Art divided the School of Art and Design to the School of Fine Arts and School of Design in August 2001 in order to construct an educational system that meets the needs of the times, in order to find ways to help the university grow.

    SEMINAR FOR ACADEMIC LIFE
    1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.

    SOFTWARE AND AI
    Software and AI (Artificial Intelligence) course aims to educate the basic concepts of software and computational thinking to use them in various applications. It allows students of various majors to experience the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, such as big data, machine learning, and AI. It also introduces various applications of AI so that students can easily apply these technologies to their field of study. This course classifies the lecture types into three categories, and adjust the lecture difficulty according to the student's academic ability.

    2D GRAPHICS A
    Finding new problems by bring up a problem about the role and situation of communication design in the social and cultural context. In addition, learning comprehensive design abilities which are appropriate communication skill, design knowledge, design sense, handling skills of hardware and software.     2D GRAPHICS B
    As the basic course of computer graphics for design, this class emphasize the learning of various expression skills of 2D programs. Students build up their ability to express ideas efficiently by using computers in the process of design.

    DIGITAL DRAWING
    This class is a foundation course for designing to understand the basic concept and principle of design in 2 dimensions and to do the mature design through the composite of design element. And to acquire a basic plastic sense through various representations in 2-dimensional plane and applications with the media.

    HUN-MIN-JEONG-EUM TYPOGRAPHY
    Focusing on <Hun-Min-Jeong-Eum>, we study the design characteristics and value of Hangul. It helps designers understand various text language environments.

    MICRO TYPOGRAPHY
    Based on the understanding of the fundamentals of the structure of Han-gul and the traditional definition of typography, the current expressive approach is also critically dealt with. develop an eye for selecting a good typeface, an eye for finding the typeface that meets the purpose, and learn the basics of handling letters, words, and lines for effective communication.

    In this course, students will learn programming techniques, basic knowledges and skills for making a website.

    SOCIAL MEDIA PHOTO AND VIDEO
    This course focuses on understanding film and digital camera about photography theory, shooting and developing. Furthermore, students will edit photos to creative image through modifying, deforming and compositing on the computer.

    CONVERGENCE- AND INTEGRATION-BASED THINKING AND WRITING
    The ability of analyzing and solving problems is emphasized as one of the conditions for survival in the 21st century and one of the core elements of creative capabilities. This course was designed to cultivate convergence- and integration-based creative capabilities, which are integrated problem-solving capabilities to collect, analyze and process knowledge and information by reinforcing the ability of analyzing and solving problems, recreate it in a synthetic fashion, and express it effectively through speech and writing. The course will help the students cultivate their synesthesia thinking and communication skills based on sympathy with other human beings, understanding of the community, and positivity or Gongseong that is sought after by Yeungnam University. Its ultimate goals are to promote the students' creative knowledge development and reinforce their writing capabilities consistently through "convergence- and integration-based thinking and writing as a problem-solving approach."

    SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION AND SERVICE
    This course is to cultivate community sense as members of society and the global village for students in order to develop the basic knowledge required as global citizens. Especially, this course is to foster the spirit of cooperation, sharing, service, and creativity and study the social contribution and leadership to solving the challenges the global community faces. As a liberal arts course, it is centered to nurture a leader having the global capability to contribute to community development through learning the knowledge and the case on the value & logic of social responsibility focused on environmental preservation, social contribution, and good governance(ESG). This course aims to foster a generous mind, learn knowledge and technology and build the capacity to contribute to building a society towards a safer and happier world through the study of theory and practice.

    SPECIALIZED ACADEMIC ENGLISH
    The aim of the course is to help students increase their fluency and accuracy in English. The course will be co-taught by Korean and Native English instructors. Korean instructors will provide students with an opportunity to practice English structure, vocabulary, and expressions, and students will be encouraged to enhance their verbal skills by actively participating in classroom activities. Students will further practice expressing themselves in English with native English instructors.

    AI DESIGN PROCESS
    With the evolution of generative Al and its introduction into the practical design work environment, changes are being made to the existing process for design development by perfectly performing the role of a creator. In line with these changes in the design development environment and the transition of authoring tools, we can predict the design development process that will change and respond to it by designing and executing prompts that can utilize generative Al to produce formative design results.     MACRO TYPOGRAPHY
    Based on the theoretical study and case study of typography, the various theories of typography, such as the structure of letters, the principle of formation, and the correlation between letters and letters, are acquired and the design representative theory is incorporated to produce the design result required by this class. Through this process, we intend to complete the typographic application capabilities available as a basic means, from graphic, illustration to image, on a logically orderly basis.

    Type design is a class that understands the long history of graphic shapes and trends in contemporary times, and students plan and express their own fonts. In particular, based on the principle of creation of Hunminjeongeum, emphasis is placed on exploring the possibility of expression in the future Korean alphabet.

    UX DESIGN PROCESS
    UX(User experience) design is a term used to describe the overall experience and satisfaction a user has when using a product or system. It most commonly refers to a combination of software and business topics, such as selling over the web, but it applies to any result of interaction design. The course introduces not only new design process but also usability. Specially, it focuses on understanding users through observation methods and creating user scenarios. Also it fully encompasses traditional industrial design and extends it by addressing all aspects of a product or service as perceived by users.

    LOCAL VISUAL CULTURE AND DIGITAL DESIGN
    Through the experience of discovering local tangible and intangible historical and cultural assets and visual cultural assets, and finding their value and meaning, it understands the meaning of local culture and gives new meaning and value to local assets and visual cultural contents. To this end, we study historical/public value and value as information/content with objective data of local culture collected through desk research on the subject of local visual culture.
